Re: No Good Reason's Not to wear Your Seatbelt

Hmmm Not hurting anyone but yourself? True if you are in a single vehicle accident how ever if you are hit by another vehicle and causes a secondary accident because the first accident knocked you out from behind the wheel then not wearing your seatbelt would hurt someone else.

As far as the car catching on fire all I have to say while it could happen I have never seen it outside of TV or the Movies however I have seen Dozens of accidents.

In my younger days I did not always ware my seatbelt and by pure chance I was wearing it the day I flipped my car 4 times I came out of it with a nasty burse across my chest and shoulder where my seatbelt caught me I am sure I would have went through the windshield if I had not been wearing it. less than two years later I lost a cousion in a crash(not wearing his seatbelt) that same year two guys I went to HS with were in a crash neither were wearing there seatbelt one died the other has to use a cain because of his injuries.

When it comes down to it even if you do not respect your life enough to buckle up think of your family and friends attending your closed casket funeral and ask yourself whether you would be the only one getting hurt.

Re: No Good Reason's Not to wear Your Seatbelt

Well its a law and if you don't want to put it on, don't. We have speed limit laws and if you are breaking them, you get caught, you get a ticket. Same idea.

I worked on the rescue for several years and I can say that there were wrecks where if people had not had their seat belts on, there is no doubt what would have happened to them, as in a few there was passengers who didn't have seatbelts on and their endings wasn't to nice. I won't go to the lie that I never had to unbuckle someone who had died, that's not true, but the odds are better. This isn't hollywood, people don't get throw from their car, tumble down hills, and mysteriously live through wrecks that would normally kill someone (or would have killed them if they had been in the car). I'm sure it happens, but if you have that happen, might as well give up on the lottery because you're one in 6.3 billion probably just happened.

I'm not for the government controlling everything but the seat belt is like speeding, you don't want to wear it, more power to you, you don't want to follow the speed limit, more power to you, but when you get caught, don't complain.

If you're in a bad enough wreck where you are going to die, odds are seat belt isn't going to matter. The problem is the wrecks where the person could have lived and doesn't due to being tossed out. I hate putting mine on but I hate dying worse, so the lesser of the two evils is what I'll take.

And yes your car could catch on fire, and you would be trapped. You also could be thrown out of the car, the car when it hit the first time ruptures its gas tank, spills gas all around and when it ignites you still get burnt up. You know what though, if I was involved in a car wreck that had fire involved, I'd rather them know where to look for me, and maybe get me out before I died as opposed to being tossed out lay there dying a slow death. I mean neither option is good but if you see a car over the hill, where do you first look, on the bank, 10 foot to the left, over there behind the car 8 foot in shrubs or in the car?

Comparing the seat belt law to the speed limit law is not the same thing imo. Driving fast endangers more than just yourself as where the seatbelt law endangers only the individual who is not wearing it.

Re: No Good Reason's Not to wear Your Seatbelt

No it doesn't just affect the person who doesn't wear it. Ask the boy who got to see his friend splat against a tree and half of him in the vehicle with him and the other 1/2 about 50 yards down the hill if it affected him or not. Well you probably could but after seeing that wonderful sight, I doubt you can get 5 words out of him.

And it is compareable, why should I be penalyzed by a speed limit when others can't control their car. There are plenty of people who have wrecked at 25 mph or less, so speed shouldn't be a factor, people are going to wreck anyhow. Germany has no speed limit on the autobahn and has a lot less accidents than we do. I mean there are arguments no matter what side you choose in a particular subject, but facts are you have a greater chance of survival in an accident if you have your seat belt on. I don't like wearing them but oh well I will cause A)its a law and)I kind like increasing my chances of living

So I guess I should be allowed to drink a fifth of Jack and go get in my Chevy? I mean I can control the vehicle, its those social drinkers who cant drink and drive.

Re: No Good Reason's Not to wear Your Seatbelt

I agree with Pvfan. The only life you endanger by not wearing your seatbelt is your own. If you choose not to wear a seatbelt, that is your own choice. Most other laws are designed to protect others. Speed limits are designed to protect yourself and the other drivers on the road.

The government telling me to wear my seatbelt is like the government telling me I can't run in my own house with a knife or scissors.

Re: No Good Reason's Not to wear Your Seatbelt

As I mentioned before not wearing your seatbelt could cause a secondery crash (If you are dislauged from your drivers seat and therfore unable to controle your vehicle and hit a second car) this does happen and would be affecting someone else

I will admit there is times i forget to put mine on. But it is rare, even as a passenger. Seen two many accidents where the belt wasn't worn.
And a few bodies through windshields, on hoods, and well those who get tossed, only way you know is after you look for a few to find them.
One recent accident where i helped out. The car hydroplaned. Nothing the driver did wrong. Tried to drive through it and ease on to the brakes, it caused the car to go into a spin.
Ended up hitting a ditch at 45-50 miles an hour. Had the person not had on their seat belt, they probably would not be here today.
People who were standing by and seen the accident said, the drivers whole upper body come forward but the seat belt pulled them back, just before they made impact with the ditch.
Like i said i sometimes forget but 8 or 9 times out of 10 i buckle up. One thing it's the law and well now it's easily enforeable.
Biggest thing is safety for myself and my i guess my own peace of mind. But as i usually say to each their own.
